Thanksgiving This Day In History
In 1827, author Sarah Josepha Hale launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she tried to establish this holiday. It wasn’t until 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request.
In his proclamation imploring all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation,” Lincoln created Thanksgiving as a national holiday scheduled for the final Thursday in November. However, that’s only when Thanksgiving became an official holiday, the first celebration started 242 years earlier.
The First Giving Of Thanks
Although Lincoln created the official holiday, he “party” officially started back in 1621. That fall the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn harvest feast, now acknowledged as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. We all know the “party” didn’t just happen, it actually started a year earlier.
A small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers in September 1620. These Pilgrims were lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the “New World.” They were also in search of a new home where they could freely practice their religious faith. Unfortunately, their first winter was pretty brutal. Only about half of the original passengers survived to see their first spring in the New World.
During the Pilgrims first spring a Native American named Squanto taught them how to survive. Squanto taught them how to plant and grow corn, extract sap from maple trees, fish, and hunt. He also showed them which berries and nuts to harvest, while avoiding the poisonous plants.
Finally in November 1621, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast. He invited a group of Native Americans to join the Pilgrims after their first corn harvest proved successful. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving” the celebration lasted for three days. Although the first Thanksgiving did not include turkey, mashed potatoes, or pumpkin pie. Fortunately, it was successful enough to eventually become an annual holiday.

“Teaches basis history of the first Thanksgiving, origin of term “Indian,” and that turkey probably was not part of first Thanksgiving. Also, shows disrupting class is rude, bothers classmates, and gets you set to principal’s office.” — Jennifer H.
