What is Independence Day?
Independence Day is a day to commemorate the freedom and sovereignty of our nation. The United States of America celebrates its independence on July 4th. On this day, “We the People” reflect on the struggles, sacrifices, and achievements of our Founding Fathers and those who fought for independence from the King of England.
This important day in our history commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This historic document declared the separation of the American colonies from British rule. It proclaimed that all individuals have certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The Revolutionary War
The Revolutionary War, fought from 1775 to 1783, was a crucial time in American history. Brave colonists and soldiers like George Washington, who led the fight for independence, realized that taxation without representation was tyranny and not how they wanted to live in this New World.
Rather than live under the oppression of a king, thousands of miles across an ocean, the colonists decided that freedom was worth fighting for. The revolutionary war ultimately led to a new nation free from British control. Thirteen independent colonies became one, and from that time on, known as the United States of America.
Symbolism and Traditions
Independence Day is brimming with symbols and traditions. Whether it is our national flag, the colors red, white, and blue, or the patriotic songs we sing, like our national anthem. Fireworks displays, parades, and picnics are cherished traditions that bring our communities together to celebrate. Just like baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie!
In addition to our early colonial heroes, many other inspirational and heroic figures fought for our Freedoms and Rights throughout history. Individuals like Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. have all shaped our nation.
Freedom From Tyranny
While Independence Day occurs once a year, it is critical to remember that freedom and independence are not guaranteed. Tyranny is always right around the corner and looking to replace the Constitutional Republic our founding fathers fought so hard to leave us.
Remember that Independence Day is a time to celebrate our freedom, honor the past, and inspire the future. By sharing the history, traditions, and significance of our independence with family and friends, we can help them appreciate the struggles and achievements that have shaped our great nation. And never forget what our founding fathers told us:
“They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.” -Benjamin Franklin
“Educate and inform the whole mass of the people… They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.” -Thomas Jefferson
“Always stand on principle…even if you stand alone.” -John Adams
“Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light.” -George Washington
